You might want to check the serial number (located on the bottom of your camera) to be sure it is valid for warranty service in the United States.
- Coolpix cameras with serial numbers that do not begin with "3" are not eligible for warranty repair in the United States unless you have an invoice showing you purchased it out of the states. It is often the case that cameras with serial numbers not beginning with "3" were not purchased from an authorized dealer or reseller.
- Similar guidelines apply for digital single lens reflex cameras (DSLR's). D40 serial numbers that don't start with "3", D50's that don't start with "3", D70 and D70S's that don't start with "3", and D100's that don't start with "2" are not "USA models", so without an invoice proving purchase outside the US, we can't service them under warranty, and Nikon USA will not service them.
- Most lenses have a "US proceeding the serial number to show that they are a US model.
